8.Demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of learning and leadership.
Supporting Learning and Leadership with Technology
The assignment I revised was centered around a novel by Sharon Flake. The novel is The Skin I’m In. In this novel, the author tackles an issue plaguing the African American community. The issue is colorism. Colorism involves racism within one’s race based on their skin complexion. I selected this for PLO 8 “demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of learning and leadership.
Within this assignment students had to use various types of technology to obtain a grade. I took into consideration that there are students who do not perform well on tests so I chose to use various activities for the student to earn a test grade. To begin with, students had to view videos, create a PowerPoint as well as responding to short answer questions. I chose the three avenues for this assignment because it allowed the student who didn’t test well to use their creativity by creating a PowerPoint as opposed to answer questions on test. For those students who may lack creativity and prefer tests I added short answer questions for them to express their thoughts in a written response.
In addition to the presentation and short answer questions, students needed to create a Venn diagram or a double bubble map to compare and contrast light skinned black women to dark skinned black women. The purpose of this activity was for the students to see that even though these women looked differently physically they both shared pain because of the color of their skin. Moreover, I made sure that this assignment included reading from the novel, visual in the video, a Chromebook to view the video and to create their presentation and a traditional short answer reader response activity. My goal was to reach as many learning styles as possible.
Changes I made to this assignment was combining the discussion board, presentation, and short answer portion of the assignment into one activity. Previously, this assignment was broken up into three different activities. By combining all the activities into one allowed the assignment to become more of a project and I managed to reach linguistic, kinesthetic, spatial learners. I know that if it would have been a written assignment students who do not perform well on formal assessments could show their creative side in a presentation. The use of a Venn Diagram allowed them to organize their thoughts and it could be used during their presentation as well as their short answer responses.
Challenges I faced when creating this assignment was converting it into an assignment that met PLO 8. The original assignment only involved students viewing the images and stating their opinion, then watching a video to compare and contrast the two skinned tones. This in my opinion did not require to make an informed decision. However, I felt when I incorporated the presentation, discussion board and short answers I felt that I was meeting the needs of various learning styles in my classroom. In addition, the use of discussion board forum allowed students to work on their written skills by allowing them to communicate with their peers on one topic. Also, it allowed them to debate on a topic and it required them to take a solid stand and to use information from the text, video, and personal experience to express their thoughts.
