3. Design learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies to support the needs of all learners
Supporting the Needs of All Learners Description of Learning Activity The learning activity is a research project for seventh graders. The research project assignment is geared to prepare students for either college or career. The assignment will involve students selecting a career that they find interesting. Before the research begins, students will be given three rubrics that will provide them the requirements to receive full credit. The research will require students to write a paper, create a model as well as present their findings. The model must be an object that relates to their career choice. Also, students must create an original model that cannot be purchased or a previously used object. Lastly, students will be required to present their findings in a 3-5 minute VoiceThread presentation. Objectives Given a chrome book students will create Cornell Notes in a Google Document that is correctly formatted. Given a deadline of due dates student will submit completed assignments to include rough drafts, model instruction and five slide presentation. Given a rubric students will create a research project that includes the research paper, model and presentation. Given a podium microphone projector and laptop students will present their findings to include 10 Google Presentation that will be converted into a VoiceThread slides that are 3-5 minutes in length. Description of Instructional Methods An appealing aspect of having students complete research project is its ability to cover numerous instructional methods. To begin with, the teacher must demonstrate for students the proper way to take Cornell Notes. This process involves the teacher creating a Google Document and showing students how to divide notes into key words and notes. By dividing the notes up into two sections, Cornell Notes help students organize their information which avoids them becoming overwhelmed with information. After the teacher, has modeled the note taking strategy students will collaborate with their partner to create their own notes based on the given article. Collaborating with their partner gives students the opportunity to create their own notes and share their thoughts. Lastly, students will demonstrate independently by creating Cornell Notes for their project. In addition, collaborating with their partner is cooperative learning. Students enhance their communication and social skills as well as facilitate learning. Another instructional method used is simulation. Students will be given a rubric that the teacher will provide information on how to receive full credit on their paper, model, and presentation. The teacher will demonstrate how to interpret the rubric by showing students a model and how it was scored. Students will know that they will receive immediate feedback after their presentation. As the project progresses, students will take their prior knowledge of Cornell Notes and begin implementing them during their research. Students during the discovery process should take notes on information they did not know about their topic. Moreover, this process will aid students in deciding if the career they selected is still of interest to them. Lastly, students will participate in drill and practice. At this stage the teacher will model for students the proper way to present. Students will know the proper way to stand, make eye contact, speak loud and clear and a steady pace. For three days students will practice their introduction on the day one, day two their findings and day three their model. This will provide students the opportunity to become comfortable presenting in front of their peers. Evaluation of Instructional Methods Selection
This research project is student centered. The teacher will only spend fifteen minutes each day instructing and students will have the remaining time to work independently on their assignments. Students will have opportunities to collaborate with their partner after each lesson. Then they will be given the remainder of the time in class to work on their research, paper or presentation. During the note taking process, students will be learning independently and they will determine what information is relevant to their career. Throughout the research process the teacher will monitor student progress and provide feedback. During this process the teacher will provide immediate feedback when students practice their presentation. To ensure that students are retaining what is being taught, the teacher will allow after each instruction for students to collaborate with a peer then students will work independently on their research, paper and presentation. When students are collaborating with their partner, students will be given 15 minutes to complete assignments and after reviewing the collaborative assignments students will separate and work on their research independently. Explanation of Technology(-ies) Selected Technologies that will be used daily are projector, document camera, and laptop during instruction. I selected the projector because it is the best tool to use during presentation. A document camera will used to student work from previous years. The laptop is need because it holds the information that the teacher will be covering. Each time the teacher models the projector will used to project what is being shown on the laptop. Students will use chrome book to research their career. Chrome books were chosen because there is a classroom set and each student will have their own to work on their project. Students will use PowerPoint to create their presentation. PowerPoint was selected because student need to practice on how to use the software because it will be used throughout their academic and possibly their career. During
presentations, students will use a microphone, laptop, projector, Google Document and VoiceThread. The laptop is needed to show the VoiceThread presentation and the projector will show viewers what is being covered. Instructions for Technology(-ies) To instruct, a lesson laptop or desktop is needed. In this case it will be a laptop. The laptop will be turned on and connected to the internet. Students must be able to access and have a Google email account. The purpose of the email is for students to be able to access Google Documents. Google Documents will be used for students to complete their Cornell Notes during their research. The projector will be connected to the laptop for students to see what is being covered. The teacher will model the correct way to create Cornell Notes on a Google Document. The document camera will be used to show former student work. The document camera is directly connected to the projector and students can see student work. The projector assist visual learners because it provides students the opportunity to see what they need to do other than just hear instruction. Redesign My intial lesson involved students creating Cornell Notes on BrainPop however; after attempting this lesson I discovered that students must have an account with BrainPop that is purchased through the school. I revised the lesson and taught students how to create Cornell Notes in a Google Document. This was an easy adjustment because students were familiar with Google Documents and only had to make a copy of my template and they were able to add their own information to the document. In addition, instead of having students present the lesson in front of the class, I had student create a presentation in Google Presentations and then convert their presentation in a VoiceThread. This change was pivotal because students who had intense stage fright and speaking in front of a class were able to present their information on VoiceThread and I was able grade their assignment at my leisure as opposed to having it presented and graded in the classroom. Also, VoiceThread allowed me the opportunity to grade the presentation at home without having to rush through grading throughout presentations. Without having to grade during live presentation, it allowed me the opportunity to be more specific and detailed in regard to their grade and my feedback.
